Adele approaches the stage of Birmingham's Glee Club with a mug of honey and hot water in hand, she's feeling under the weather and proceeds to apologise for the croaks in her voice during tonight's performance. Perched on a stool with acoustic guitar in hand the songstress kicks off the night with the charming "Painting Pictures". Adele need not have apologised as her voice is beyond incredible, it's amazingly animated, the kind of stuff that gives you Goosebumps, and the occasion little croak made each song all the more real and wonderful. Adele breezes through the Challenging high notes of "Daydreamer" with grace and a little giggle. The acoustic version of "Hometown Glory" is a perfect gem giving the audience an insight into how she writes and then performs her songs to her friends and family. The only cover of the night came in the form of a fantastic bluesy rendition of Sam Cooke's "That's It, I Quit, I'm Movin' on"... superb! Influenced by such diverse artists as Jill Scott, Etta James, Johny Cash, Peggy Lee and Billy Bragg, Adele’s songs are of love's challenges and life's embrace. Delivered with a soul that caresses the very fabric of your being, and a range that shifts from immense power to angelic femininity with amazing ease and a maturity beyond her tender years.
At only 19 years old Adele, a graduate of The Brit School is an exciting new British talent to watch in 2008. Adele's debut single "Hometown Glory" has been championed by Radio One's DJs Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley and she also made her television debut this summer on Later with Jools Holland performing "Daydreamer". |
